MANAGUA, July 9, 2007 ( ACI) .- The Foreign Ministry reported that Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega has formally invited Pope Benedict XVI to visit the country when sees fit.
Through a statement, the Government announced that Foreign Minister Samuel Santos, currently visiting in Italy, delivered the invitation to the Secretary for Relations with States of the Vatican, Archbishop Dominique Mamberti.
Pope John Paul II visited Nicaragua in 1983, when Ortega headed Board of Government of National Reconstruction. During this trip, Sandinista supporters interrupted the Mass celebrated by the pontiff with cries against the United States.
In his previous government, Ortega remained tense relations with the Catholic Church but this period was characterized by its proximity to some bishops .
